The upper motor is used to rotate the horn assembly and the Rotosonic drum in newer Leslie speakers (122A, 147A, 122XB, 771, 971, etc.). The lower motor is used to rotate the lower bass rotor found in newer Leslie speakers. These motors in conjunction with the electronic motor control board present in the newer model Leslies provide both the slow and fast Leslie speeds. The current updated motors feature long-life ball bearings and are designed to run cooler and quieter than previous motor designs.
